harbor town surrounded by the city of Oxnard in Ventura County,

Port Hueneme (pronounced "wye-NEE-mee") is governed by a 5 member
city-council that manages a total budget of approximately
$33 million. The largest employer in the area is the Navy
because Port Hueneme, California is home to a large naval
base that primarily focuses on engineering, maintenance,
and construction.
The city was incorporated in 1948, and became
a Charter City in 1996 which allows it to have greater control
over its local area. The southern part of Port Hueneme is
within the Hueneme School District and has 4 elementary
schools and 1 junior high school. Some northern parts of the
city are under the Oxnard School District with 2 elementary
schools, 2 middle schools, and Hueneme High School and Oxnard
High School.
As of the 2000 census, there were about
22,000 people living in the city within 7,300 households and
5,000 families. The city has a diverse racial makeup with 41%
of its population being Hispanic or Latino. The median family
income was about $46,000, while only 9.8% of families fall
below the poverty line.
Port Hueneme is the only deep
water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco, so it gets a
lot of business for shipping and receiving automobiles,
pineapples, bananas, and more.
